What Are UV Air Sanitizers & Purifiers?

UV air sanitizers and purifiers are in-home systems that work to remove pollutants from the air. They use ultraviolet light to reduce mold, allergens, and even airborne viruses. There are several types of UV air sanitizers and purifiers, including portable, whole house, filtered, and non-filtered. Purifiers with filters are usually recommended as they pull pollutants out of the air and store them within the filter rather than being fed back into the air.

What's the Difference Between a UV Air Sanitizer & An Air Purifier?

UV air sanitizers and purifiers are similar, but they differ in a few important ways:

  • Sanitizers: Some sanitizers using UV light produce ozone as a combatant to the indoor pollutants. The EPA discourages ozone generators in the home as ozone is harmful to the lungs. Other UV air sanitizers are much safer and use germicidal irradiation to destroy biological pollutants like bacteria, viruses, and allergens.
  • Purifiers: Purifiers contain filters that do not produce ozone; they pull pollutants out of the air and are much more effective at removing dust and smoke. However, purifiers do not remove airborne viruses.

How Do UV Lights Work Within the HVAC System?

Whole-house UV air sanitizers can be installed as a fixture to the existing heating and cooling units of the home. They are installed within the duct system to protect the HVAC system from collecting dust and other particles that harm the fans and coils; these are not used for indoor air quality. However, higher-efficiency models do work to improve indoor air quality using UV light. By exposing mold and bacteria to the UV light, they are attacked and broken down over time.

Why Consider a UV Air Sanitizer or Air Purifier?

Those who suffer from asthma or allergies benefit most from UV air sanitizers and purifiers. However, each one is different and produces different results. It may be beneficial to do some research on the type of sanitizer or purifier that is right for your lungs and your home. For example, if you are a smoker, a purifier is better for your home as it removes smoke more effectively from the air.
